Healthcare
Luetkemeyer supports solutions that encourage competition among healthcare providers and legislation that encourages health savings accounts and small business plans. He does not support a universal healthcare system. [1]
Immigration
Luetkemeyer supports ensuring that all who wish to come into our country abide by the rule of law, punishing businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants, eliminating taxpayer funding of all benefits for illegal immigrants,and increasing border security. He does not support the amnesty bills that have been considered by Congress. [1]
Taxes
Luetkemyer says he will support making the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 permanent, and he has pledged to end all Congressional earmarks. [1]
Second Amendment
He is a strong supporter of second Amendment rights, and the rights of hunters. He has been endorsed by the NRA in the past. [1]
Stem Cells and Abortion
Luetkemeyer has received a 100 percent pro-life rating from Missouri Right to Life. He is also opposed to using embryonic stem cells for research. [1]
Bio
Blaine Luetkemeyer lives in St. Elizabeth, MO, with his wife, Jackie, to whom he has been married for 32 years. He is a father of three and a grandfather of one. He is both a small businessman and a farmer. He owns the Luetkemeyer Insurance Agency and his family owns the Bank of St. Elizabeth. He graduated from Lincoln University with a degree of distinction in Political Science and a minor in Business Administration. [2]
From 1999 to 2005, he was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives. During this time, he was appointed Chair of the Financial Services Committee. In 2000, he was elected by his colleagues to the post of House Republican Caucus Chairman. During his tenure in the state legislature, many conservative laws were passed, including a ban on partial-birth abortion, conceal-and-carry legislation, and workers' compensation reform. Also passed was the Sanctity of Marriage Amendment, which Luetkemeyer co-sponsored and which was subsequently approved by 71 percent of the state's voters. [3]
In 2006, he was appointed as the Director of the Missouri Division of Tourism. In this capacity, he helped to initiate the Tour of Missouri cycling event, which is the largest sporting event in all of Missouri. [4]
2008 elections
Luetkemeyer was the Republican nominee seeking to replace Rep. Kenny Hulshof (R-Mo.) in the 2008 congressional elections. He won in primary elections which took place on August 5, 2008, and went on to defeat Democratic nominee Judy Baker in the November 4, 2008 general election.[5]
